Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (13.5″): Full Specs / In-depth Review

Display quality

The laptop has a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with a resolution of 2256 x 1504p and a 3:2 aspect ratio. The pixel density stands at 201 PPI, while the pixels have a pitch of just 0.126 x 0.126 mm. The Retina distance of 43cm is also pretty good.

Furthermore, the panel has great viewing angles, a max brightness of 390 nits in the middle of the screen, 388 nits as an average for the entire display area, and a maximum deviation of 4%. The brightness uniformity is nothing short of amazing.

Color coverage

The panel covers 95% of the sRGB color gamut.

Color accuracy

We tested the accuracy with both the factory settings (left), and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right). Even with the stock settings, we got a dE value of 1.5, which is better than what most other offerings can brag about. With our profile, it went down even further, to 0.5. Safe to say you can crush any type of color-sensitive work on this device, especially with the onboard hardware, which can handle more complex tasks that require more computing power.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
