ASUS ROG GL502VS’s GeForce GTX 1070 scores lower than usual. Why is that?

Yesterday we posted our full review of the updated ASUS ROG GL502VS with the monstrous GeForce GTX 1070 on board and some users will be happy to see a fully-functional, high-performance 15-inch gaming laptop. But as it turns out, the high-performance part is somehow conditional and there’s a bit of a trade-off.

You can find the notebook’s price and configurations here: http://amzn.to/2gRqqFl

Our benchmark tests show up to 16-17% lower performance compared to the 17-inch ASUS ROG G752VS and this has resulted in crippled gaming performance as well. This came as a surprise since the stress tests didn’t show any signs of thermal throttling or unusually low frequencies. Perhaps the form factor and the relatively compact chassis are the ones to blame due to the limited air flow for cooling.

We will further investigate the matter and we plan to do so in an extensive article comparing another 15-inch laptop – the Acer Predator 15 (G9-593) – with a GTX 1070 and the ASUS ROG GL502VS. We will also include the ASUS ROG G752VS in the mix as a representative of the 17-inchers. We will put all three to test and closely monitor the clock speeds of the GPU and find out the source of the problem. Of course, all units will be taken directly from the store instead of using a pre-production sample that may have some problems with the early development.
