Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT to buy the Lenovo ThinkPad T15 Gen 2

The T-series from Lenovo has some of the most used laptops in the enterprise world. Their features and designs are very recognizable, and Lenovo has done a good job of maintaining the quality, in a world of consumerism where you replace devices every year or two.

The ThinkPad T15 Gen 2 keeps the great build quality of the previous device while introducing new and fresh tech from Intel, in the faces of several Tiger Lake processors, which strike a great balance between performance and power efficiency.

Today we are presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Lenovo ThinkPad T15 Gen 2.

Lenovo ThinkPad T15 Gen 2: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo ThinkPad T15 Gen 2

1. Design and build quality

The laptop uses a fair amount of premium materials. The lid is offered with either an aluminum lid or a combination of plastic and glass fiber, both of which are quite sturdy. The base is made of magnesium alloy, giving you profound rigidity, while minimizing the weight. The bottom panel uses the previously mentioned plastic+glass fiber combination. The design of the laptop won’t impress with its looks, as this is not its purpose. The laptop looks like ThinkPads from 5 years ago, and that’s not a bad thing, as it still does a fantastic job, and many businesses don’t care a lot about looks. In terms of weight and height, the laptop stops the scales at 1.75 kg, while being 19.1 mm tall.

The lid doesn’t open easily with a single hand but reveals a set of peripherals that are more than good. The keyboard has spill resistance, a backlight, long key travel, and clicky feedback. You can also find a red TrackPoint, with three physical buttons. Below these buttons, you can find a Mylar-surfaced touchpad, which provides smooth gliding and accurate tracking.

2. Upgradeability

While the upgradeability isn’t superb, it’s still here. Half of the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard, but there is one SODIMM RAM slot, for a total of up to 48GB of DDR4 RAM. As for the storage, there is a single M.2 PCIe x4 slot.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows exactly how to get access to both the SODIMM and SSD slots.

3. I/O

The laptop has a very wide I/O, which consists of two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0 connector, a MicroSD card slot, an Ethernet connector, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a side docking connector.

4. Battery life

The laptop has a 57Wh battery unit, which goes along well with the power-efficient Tiger Lake processors. The battery lasted for 13 hours and 3 minutes of Web browsing, and 9 hours and 38 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the Lenovo ThinkPad T15 Gen 2

1. Display

The laptop offers two IPS displays, both with a diagonal of 15.6 inches. The first display has a Full HD resolution, which was the display that we tested. The second option is a 4K display, which offers 100% AdobeRGB coverage and 600 nits of brightness. Our display had comfortable viewing angles, 336 nits of max brightness in the middle of the screen, 330 nits as an average for the entire display area, and a maximum deviation of just 4%. The contrast ratio is quite good at 1350:1.

Sadly, the screen performed rather poorly, covering only 52% of the sRGB color gamut.

The color accuracy isn’t something to write home about either. Regardless if you use our Design and Gaming profile, you wouldn’t reach a standard matching dE value.

Here are the results of our test with both the factory settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

In addition to receiving efficient and health-friendly profiles, by buying LaptopMedia's products you also support the development of our labs, where we test devices in order to produce the most objective reviews possible.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.
