Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT to buy the Acer Swift X (SFX14-41G)

To see a laptop like the Acer Swift X (SFX14-41G), which features this hardware and portability level, is insane. The way technology has progressed in the last couple of years is mind-blowing.

Who would have thought that a laptop that is less than 1.40 kg heavy would be able to pack a Ryzen 7 5800U and an RTX 3050 Ti? The combination is both very potent and a huge gamble, as now Acer has to deal with cooling them both down while not having a lot of room to work with.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Acer Swift X (SFX14-41G).

Acer Swift X (SFX14-41G): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Acer Swift X (SFX14-41G)

1. Design and build quality

The near all-metal design feels amazing to touch, while also making the device look very good. The body has a stylish two-tone finish, with our unit receiving a golden lid with a silvery base. There is a small Acer wordmark in the center of the lid, with this being the only branding on the laptop. The lid also has a leverage mechanism, which lifts up the rear of the laptop, giving the fans more room to breathe. The laptop is quite sturdy and didn’t bend that much when we tried to twist it.

2. Display quality

The laptop has a single IPS display option, but it is very good. It has a 14-inch diagonal and a Full HD resolution.  The panel has comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 376 nits in the middle of the screen, 372 nits as an average for the entire area of the display, and a maximum deviation of 6%. The contrast ratio is also very high – 1890:1. The laptop also covers 97% of the sRGB color gamut.

The color coverage didn’t match the standard with the factory settings, but after we applied our Design and Gaming profile, the dE value went down to 1.0, which is within the standard.

Here are the results with the default settings (left), and with the Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

3. Battery life

The laptop has a spectacular battery life, despite having a medium-sized 59Wh battery unit. The battery lasted for 15 hours and 11 minutes of Web browsing, and 11 hours and 48 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. Performance

The laptop offers a lot of power under its small hood, coming equipped with the Ryzen 7 5800U and the RTX 3050 with the RTX 3050 Ti also being available.

A few other important things to note, and I say this as someone who bought 2 of these. The Mediatek Wifi card it ships with is garbage. I had connectivity problems and slow performance. I replaced them with an Intel AX210 and the problems went away. The 3050Ti is a 40W version, so performance will be a bit lower than a card drinking at higher wattage. I found you can get about 10% greater performance using MSI’s Afterburner utility and pushing to about +250/500 on core/memory clicks. YMMV. Storage is only PCIe 3.0 – something inherent in all mobile Ryzen… Read more »
