Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 vs Snapdragon 808 – specs sheet, benchmark results and temperatures test

Although Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 808 have been available on the market for quite some time, they’re still some of the highest performing Qualcomm SoCs and are found in quite a few top-tier smartphones. This is the main reason why we decided to do a more detailed comparison in which we’re going to include specs, test results from our benchmark test and even the outer temperatures of the devices using the SoCs. For the purpose of this comparison, we’re going to take a look at Nexus 5X, which boasts Snapdragon 808, and Sony Xperia Z5 with the Snapdragon 810.

We’re using the MSM8992 version of the Snapdragon 808 SoC that holds six cores in total. The first four are Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.44 GHz. They take care of the not so demanding everyday tasks and consume less energy. The other two are Cortex-A57 clocked at 1.82 GHz. They are the ones that take care of the heavier tasks, but also drain the battery a bit faster. Snapdragon 808 is a 64-bit SoC with 20nm manufacturing process, capable of 4K video recording and playback. The mobile chip also supports screens with up to Ultra HD resolution, Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging technology, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, as well as LTE Cat9, which provides up to 450 Mbps download speeds. The chip also integrates the Adreno 418 GPU.

Snapdragon 810 also has 64-bit architecture and 20nm manufacturing process. The version we’re using for this comparison is MSM8994 that boasts eight cores separated into two clusters. The first one has four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and takes care of the “easy” tasks resulting in lower energy consumption. The second cluster, however, has four more powerful Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.00 GHz. It takes care of the heavy duty tasks, but again, as you’ve probably already guessed, drains the battery life faster. The mobile chip supports 4K video recording and playback, screens with up to Ultra HD resolution, Quick Charge 2.0 technology, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac, as well as LTE Cat9. The difference in the SoCs comes from the support for LPDDR4 RAM as well as cameras with up to 55MP sensors and also the Snapdragon 810 integrates the Adreno 430 GPU.

Benchmark results

There’s not a single doubt that both SoCs are some of the most powerful mobile chips currently on the market and there’s no other way for us to adequately compare them unless we use the results in our benchmark tests. Below you can see side by side the scores of Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 808 in our computing performance tests (the top four) and graphic performance tests (bottom three).

Temperatures

Now that we’ve compared the benchmark results of both mobile chips, it’s time to see how much they affect the smartphones in terms of outer temperatures. Although, Snapdragon 810 is often criticized for causing devices to overheat, the case with Xperia Z5 is slightly different. The temperatures we were able to measure are somewhat in the normal range and comparing them to those of Nexus 5X and the Snapdragon 808, the differences are close to none. A reminder of what our temperatures test consists of – we simulate a couple of hours of 3D gaming, using the Epic Citadel app and after that, we measure the temperatures on the back of the phones in three different areas.
