MSI X99A GODLIKE GAMING CARBON preview – when you want the best for your configuration

We continue with our previews of motherboards that are special in some respects. After we had a look at what Gigabyte H170-Gaming 3 has to offer, it is time to turn our attention to the “extreme” models, and more precisely – MSI, X99A GODLIKE GAMING CARBON. We were more than happy with another motherboard by the Taiwanese comapny, Z170I GAMING Pro AC,  we can’t wait to examine the most significant specs of the present model.

Socket, RAM and CPU support

It is no surprise that this is a high-end motherboard. You can tell this by the socket – 2011-3. It is namely there where you install Intel’s extreme CPUs that feature more than four cores – Intel announced its 10-core Core i7-6950X which is also meant for socket 2011-3. Additionally, X99A GODLIKE GAMING CARBON allows you to install the 8-core Intel Core i7-5960X which speaks very well of the motherboard class. Of course, you can use several other Core i7 chips that are 6-core (i7-5930K and i7-5820K), and the other part of supported CPUs belong to Intel’s Xenon server lineup.

X99A GODLIKE GAMING CARBON-2

Because you have the option of installing such a wide variety of chips, the motherboard also features overclocking capabilities. They consist not only in increasing the CPU base frequency, but also in “draining” the RAM. You are provided with eight slots for up to 128 GB of RAM. Unfortunately, Core i7 chips support up to 64 GB, but server chips such as the 22-core Inte Xenon E5-2699 v4 will have no problems using 128 GB of RAM. MSI has added extra metal protection that ensures better signal and increases RAM performance. Furthermore, the entire circuit of these slots is isolated. All this leads to stability and quality necessary for any high-end component.

Options for Quad SLI/CrossFire

Yes, this motherboard allows up to four GPUs irrespective of their manufacturer (AMD or NVIDIA). The motherboards we have reviewed or written articles about didn’t use to have so many slots or work properly with “green” cards. Because NVIDIA has stated that a normal SLI mode requires at least two x8 slots, X99A GODLIKE GAMING CARBON provides five of them. If you desire to use Quad CrossFire or SLI configurations, follow this GPUs configuration: x8/ x8/ x0/ x16/ x8.
