Inside Dell Inspiron 15 5584 – disassembly and upgrade options

Dell Inspiron 15 5584 is part of new generation devices, that ditch service lids (which offer easy upgradability) for the sake of easing the access to the entire surface area. Additionally, it is tons easier to disassemble than its predecessor – the Inspiron 15 5570.

1. Remove the bottom plate

There are a total of 9 screws that secure the bottom plate in place. Two of them – the bottom corner ones, are acting as clips as well and upon unscrewing they let the plate loose. This is exactly where you’re going to start your prying process. You’ll need to put the laptop at 90 degrees to continue with the prying, because… well because Dell has decided so with their design.

2. Battery

Now that we’re inside, let’s take a look at the power supply – the 42 Wh battery pack. It is held in place with 4 Phillips-head screws. It is rather easy to take it off as there are no sticky pads – just don’t forget to unplug it first – these connectors are painful to replace when broken. Sadly this 42Wh battery’s results are exactly as unamusing as the capacity itself – you’ll get a little bit more than 6 hours of web browsing and five hours and a half of video playback.

3. Memory and storage

Memory-wise there are two RAM DIMMs, able to support up to 32GB of DDR4 memory at speeds of up to 2400 MHz, while on the storage side there are a SATA connector and an M.2 slot. The former is located on the left side of the battery, while the latter can be found on the right of the battery and supports NVMe SSDs with PCIe x2 speeds.

4. Cooling system

Here we see a rather familiar but ineffective design – a single, fat heat pipe cooling both the CPU and the GPU. Usually, it should be a problem when you are using only the processor, but when you add some load on the graphics card, things change drastically. Additionally, we found the laptop to be very noisy even when just browsing through the OS.
