HP OMEN 17 (17-ck0000) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

The biggest laptop in HP’s OMEN series, the OMEN 17 brings a big 17.3-inch display that will provide an amazing gaming experience for a laptop. In terms of performance, the device is powered by Intel’s Tiger Lake H45 processors, including the sum of all fears, the Core i9-11900H, which we didn’t get to test sadly.

GPU-wise, we have the RTX 3000-series, with the laptop offering up to the RTX 3070. The configuration that we tested had the Core i7-11800H and the RTX 3060, which comes with a 130W TGP, so it should rip through 1080p gaming.

Today we are presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the HP OMEN 17 (17-ck0000).

HP OMEN 17 (17-ck0000): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP OMEN 17 (17-ck0000)

1. Input devices

HP has done something drastic, by eliminating the NumPad on this 17.3-inch laptop. Doing so, allows the Arrow keys to have their own space around them so that you don’t accidentally press them. The keycaps themselves are quite large and very comfortable, bringing long key travel and clicky feedback. The left side of the base also features an array of six programmable buttons. The touchpad has great size, however, the surface and accuracy aren’t the best out there.

2. I/O

The laptop brings wide I/O coverage, with the left side housing a power plug, an Ethernet port, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, a Mini DisplayPort 1.4 port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and an SD card reader. The right side has two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports.

3. Upgradeability

Being a large 17.3-inch gaming device, it covers all the bases when it comes to upgradeability. Two SODIMM slots support dual-channel DDR4 RAM running at 3200MHz.

For storage, there are two M.2 PCIe x4 slots, with one port having Gen 4 support, while the other one has Gen 3 support.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

4. Display quality

The 17.3-inch Full HD IPS panel has a 144Hz refresh rate, which is ideal for gaming and first-person shooters. The GPU also reaches framerates of above 144 FPS in several shooters, so you would actually be able to take advantage of the fast display. Furthermore, the laptop has comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 353 nits in the middle of the screen and 350 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of 6%.

The color coverage sits at 92% of the sRGB color gamut, which is fantastic for a gaming device, that can also be used for color-sensitive work.

However, the accuracy isn’t the greatest that we have seen. With the stock settings, we get a dE value of 8.7, which goes down to 3.6 once we apply our Design and Gaming profile. That is definitely better, but still not enough for professional work. If you still want to learn how to design graphics or create digital art, this will be a great device.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

1 reason NOT to buy the HP OMEN 17 (17-ck0000)

1. Battery life

With a large display and powerful internals, the battery life suffers, despite the 83Wh unit. The device lasts for only 1 hour and 51 minutes of Web browsing, and 2 hours of video playback. It is still a bit weird, and we are contacting HP for further clarification about what might be causing this.
