[35 Gaming tests + videos] NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 [90W] – the bigger TGP leads to more performance in some games

If you want to experience extras like ray-tracing and DLSS, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 is the most affordable video solution that can handle these two options. Thanks to the big improvements in terms of visuals quality, DLSS is now a thing that allows a lot of users to experience ray-tracing without a significant FPS drop. We already reviewed the 80W GeForce RTX 2060 and it’s a pretty decent GPU that is too close to the performance levels of the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. But if you need the RTX features, the RTX 2060 is the cheapest solution.

That’s why for today’s article we have the 90W version of the GeForce RTX 2060. This time the whole configuration is different – the CPU of the tested laptop is the AMD Ryzen 9 4900H (which is the most powerful mobile Ryzen CPU at the end of 2020) and the RAM is 2x8GB 3200MHz. The configuration is more than decent so let’s see what is capable of and how much exactly 10W bigger TGP matters in games.

Specs overview

We have a Turing GPU with ray-tracing support and 240 tensor cores. This GPU uses the TU106 chip and it has 48 ROPs, 1920 shaders, and there are three different TGP variants – 80W, 90W, and 115W. Frequencies-wise, they can go up to 1005 MHz for the base clock and up to 1560 MHz for the boost. Normally, we have 6GB GDDR6 memory (14000 MHz) with a 192-bit memory bus.

Verdict

Actually, the results are not bad at all but we saw some strange behavior of this GPU (probably due to our particular configuration). In some games like CS:GO, the 80W version clearly outperforms the 90W one but in AC: Odyssey the 90W GeForce RTX 2060 wins with a decent margin. In a hefty amount of games, the 80W version takes the lead in Low-to-Medium settings while the 90W variant leads in High and Ultra presets. Maybe the Ryzen CPUs need some additional software optimizations (because on Low and Medium settings the games are more or less CPU-bound) or maybe the problem is somewhere else, who knows. But who will buy an RTX 2060-based laptop to play games on the lowest possible settings?

No matter what, the overall performance was quite good. The GeForce RTX 2060 [90W] offers a good performance bump in some games than the 80W version but in other tittles both GPUs are very close. As always it’s up to your personal preferences and wallet size. If the price difference between these two siblings is close, the 90W variant seems like a good deal. But if the price gap is too big the first logical choice is the 80W GeForce RTX 2060 and if you want more performance the next ones on the list are the 115W GeForce GTX 2060 and the non-SUPER GeForce RTX 2070.
