Dell Precision 16 7670 review – is CAMM memory here to stay?

Last year was pivotal for the world of heavy-duty laptops. With the popularisation of 16-inch screens, we saw fewer and fewer 15-inch specimens hit the market. This is how Precision 16 7670 came to fruition.

What we can say at first glance is that it received a much-needed redesign. It now looks more modern with its sharp corners and small bezels around its display. Speaking of which, Dell now offers you the opportunity to buy the Precision 16 7670 with a 4K OLED display. Something that is rarely seen by this particular brand.

You know, there is one thing that makes workstations exciting – their hardware. This device can be purchased with a quite powerful CPU, which has a high core count, and a 55W base TDP. That is the Core i9-12950HX.

Some people (us included) are confused by the graphics card choice, and what this has to do with the body panel. Well, many laptops offer different cooling solutions, depending on the GPU inside. This machine’s roster ranges from the RTX A1000 to the RTX A5500 – extremely different performance profiles.

Hence, the RTX A1000 and RTX A2000 come inside a thinner chassis, called the Precision 16 7670 Thin base. Respectively, the rest of the field that needs a better cooling system, has to rely on a thicker chassis. But since “Thick base” sounds a little sexist, Dell calls it “Performance base”.

Another thing that’s worth noting is the fact that Dell explores new territories in the memory department. However, we’ll keep our cards to our chest until we get to that part of the review.

What’s in the box?

Inside what looks like pretty standard packaging, we find the mandatory paperwork, as well as a 180W charger. Some units will receive a 230W unit, but what is arguably more important, is the fact that Dell uses almost entirely recycled materials with nearly no plastic for the packaging.

Try running the 7670 with an RTX A3000… even with the thicker chassis, the cooling system is absolutely demolished by any kind of load that hits the CPU and GPU at the same time. Games are bad enough, but professional 3D workloads are appalling. The CPU wattage and CPU frequency is throttled down so low, the laptop is slower than it’s predecessors (Precision 7550 or 7560). With only 2 heatpipes shared between the CPU and GPU, and the fans at the end of the thermal line, any load on the GPU overwhelms the CPU.

Indeed. There are several gurus (e.g. Tech3D channel on YouTube) discussing the poor job Dell is doing with thermal management on these machines, not to mention using the same old 240 watt adapter which causes these system to be power starved. Inexcusable.

Piggybacking a powerful CPU and GPU this way being questionable in the first place, heat efficiency appears to suffer further by the second heat pipe falling short of covering the entire width of the second fan, seeming to cover only about half the width – alas, the hinge is in the way. The heat sink’s width is also halved in this section to accomodate the hinge. It’s a good example of high quality material put to bad use.
