Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1 review – part from the Evo platform with a Dolby Vision display

The latest part of the Inspiron convertible family is the Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1. It should bring a set of needed improvements to the usability, as well as the performance. Actually, one of the big selling points of the new generation is the Evo platform of Intel. This means it packs Tiger Lake processors that are extremely well optimized, and come bundled with dual-channel memory.

And for such a small notebook, optimization is everything. In addition to that Dell boasts a Dolby Vision display with supposed 100% sRGB color coverage and 300 nits of brightness, ultimately aiming the laptop towards professional users.

Let’s not forget the Wi-Fi 6 support, which is now coming as a standard for quite a lot of devices on the market. And something that in our opinion should be standard for every laptop that has a touchscreen panel and a 360° hinge – included stylus. As you may know, it is not often that we see manufacturers put some of these inside the boxes, but in this case – they did.

What’s in the box?

Inside the package, we saw some paper manuals and a 65W power brick. Some units (as well as the “Black” version of the notebook, will be bundled with a USB Type-C charger.

Design and construction

This laptop is entirely made out of aluminum. The anodized finish provides a cool touch and the measurements are fine for a convertible – 15.7-15.9mm thickness and 1.23 kg. Although the lid is almost free of flex, the base twists and bends quite a lot. Moreover, the twists result in accidental clicks on the touchpad, which is not ideal.

Opening the lid here cannot be done with a single hand. However, once we open it we see thin bezels all around the display, as well as a glass cover. It has quite a responsive touchscreen which works well with the included stylus. Above the panel, there is a 720p camera with a privacy shutter. Additionally, Dell has implemented the lifted backside of the base, thanks to the lid and its rubber feet in the back. This time, in contrast to the Inspiron 14 5401 and 15 5501, the mechanism works and it lifts the device even before the 90° mark.

Next, let’s move to the base, where we found the backlit keyboard. It has short key travel and clicky feedback, which at the end of the day results in a somewhat comfortable experience for typing. In its top right corner, you will find the Power button, which doubles as a fingerprint reader. As a downside, we would note the location of the “Page Up” and “Page Down” keys, which are in very close proximity to the Arrow buttons.

It’s worth saying that the laptop has chamfered edges all around its base. They feel quite sharp to the wrists when you’re using the device, but we doubt it’s going to result in cuts and bruises. As we said, though, the laptop is a bit bendy on the keyboard deck.

Moving to the touchpad we see a decent unit with a reasonably smooth surface and accurate tracking. However, the click travel of the mechanism is a bit short, and we feel that the entire device is slightly pulled down towards the user.

Turn the laptop around and you will see the intake grills, as well as the designated speaker cutouts. The hot air here escapes the laptop from the backside, and from one of the hinge cutouts.

Ports

On the left side of the notebook, we found a charging plug, an HDMI connector, and a Thunderbolt 4 port. And on the right – there is a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an audio jack, and a MicroSD card reader.

Disassembly, upgrade options, and maintenance

To get the bottom panel of this laptop off, you need to undo 7 Phillips head screws, three of which are captive. Then, pry the panel with a plastic tool, starting from the back.

The cooling solution here consists of a thick boy heat pipe, a heat spreader, half of which spreads behind the hinge, and a low-profile fan.

Although Dell provides this laptop with 8 or 16GB of dual-channel memory, working at 4267 MHz, you won’t be able to upgrade it, since the chips are soldered to the motherboard. Thankfully, there is one M.2 PCIe x4 slot for storage upgrades.

Battery-wise, there is one 53Wh unit, which should be plenty for a laptop with a 13-inch display.

Display quality

Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1 is equipped with a Full HD IPS touchscreen panel, LG RDVF3-133WF9 (LGD0641). Its diagonal is 13.3-inch (33.78 cm), and the resolution – 1920 х 1080p. Additionally, the screen ratio is 16:9, the pixel density – 166 ppi, their pitch – 0.153 х 0.153 mm. The screen can be considered Retina when viewed from at least 53 cm (from this distance, the average human eye can’t see the individual pixels).

Viewing angles are comfortable. We offer images at different angles to evaluate the quality.

The maximum measured brightness is 284 nits (cd/m2) in the middle of the screen and 285 nits (cd/m2) average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 8%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen and at maximum brightness is 6000K – warmer than the 6500K temperature for sRGB.
In the illustration below you can see how the display performs from a uniformity perspective. The illustration below shows how matters are for operational brightness levels (approximately 140 nits) – in this particular case at 66% Brightness (White level = 142 cd/m2, Black level = 0.07 cd/m2).
Values of dE2000 over 4.0 should not occur, and this parameter is one of the first you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color-sensitive work (a maximum tolerance of 2.0 ). The contrast ratio is excellent – 2060:1.

To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people on HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Basically, colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.

Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

The yellow dotted line shows Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1’s color gamut coverage.

Its display covers 96% of the sRGB/ITU-R BT.709 (web/HDTV standard) in CIE1976, providing a punchy and vibrant image.

Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode.

We tested the accuracy of the display with 24 commonly used colors like light and dark human skin, blue sky, green grass, orange, etc. You can check out the results at factory condition and also, with the “Design and Gaming” profile.

Below you can compare the scores of Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1 with the default settings (left), and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).

The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.

The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings, while the right one is with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale, and on the vertical axis – the luminance of the display. On the two graphs below you can easily check for yourself how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle, and the surrounding light conditions.

Response time (Gaming capabilities)

We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.

We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 36 ms.

Health impact – PWM / Blue Light

PWM (Screen flickering)

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the backlight is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1’s backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment at any level. This makes it comfortable for long periods of use while being safe for your eyes in this aspect.

Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Conclusion

Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1’s IPS touchscreen panel has a Full HD resolution, excellent contrast ratio, comfortable viewing angles, and wide color coverage – 96% of the sRGB gamut. Additionally, its backlight doesn’t flicker at any brightness level. Thanks to our Gaming and Web design profile, people like Web designers, artists, creators, and e-commerce retailers can enjoy an accurate color representation with an Average dE of 1.2. Unfortunately, the nonuniformity of the color across the area of the display, and especially in the top left corner makes it inappropriate for professional work.

Despite the relatively thick heat pipe, the cooling solution seemed to struggle a lot with this processor. Even though its TDP drops to 15-16W after some time, the temperature still remains too hot in our opinion.

Comfort during full load

Also, the keyboard heated up quite a lot, considering the nature of the laptop. On the bright side, it wasn’t too loud under load.

Verdict

Comparing it to last year, the Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1 looks significantly better. Both visually, and in terms of hardware. And although you can’t upgrade the RAM post-purchase, it is good that the soldered modules come in dual-channel mode, thus enhancing the gaming performance of the integrated graphics. Interestingly enough, although this is not a gaming laptop by any means, it chews through light titles like DOTA 2 and CS:GO without any hassle.

Additionally, it has a very good battery life which accounts for 13 hours and 20 minutes of Web browsing and about 11 hours of video playback.

This is quite disappointing, considering the fact that this was almost the perfect notebook for artists. With its dedicated stylus, included inside the box, the Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, the MicroSD card slot, the Wi-Fi 6 certification, and others, we expected this to get our Editor’s choice award.

Sadly, its cooling was also not good enough, which means Dell still has more room for improvement next year. Not to mention the slightly flimsy chassis – something we definitely didn’t expect to see on an aluminum device.

Nevertheless, some of the stuff we just said was nitpicking, and the Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1 is not that necessarily bad, it is just not great.
