Intel Core i5-9300H vs Intel Core i7-8750H – 9th Gen vs 8th Gen

Age old question – Core i5 vs Core i7, in slightly different circumstances. This time we are comparing the 9th generation Core i5-9300H versus the previous generation Intel Core i7-8750H. While the newer processor offers the advantage of being latest, the Core i7-8750H still has two more cores and four more threads.

Specs overview

As we mentioned, the Core i5-9300H features a quad-core/octa-thread configuration, which is supplied with 45W of power. Additionally, it works at 2.40 GHz Base clock speed, while in Turbo it can reach up to 4.10 GHz. On the other side of the pitch, we have the six core/twelve thread Core i7-8750H, that needs the same amount of power but works at a slightly lower Base frequency – 2.20 GHz. However, in Turbo it is able to achieve the same 4.10 GHz. Cache-wise the Core i5-9300H offers 8MB, whereas the Core i7-8750H has 9MB.

What we meant by being the latest – as an advantage is that the Core i5-9300H supports up to 128GB of DDR4 memory that can speed up to 2666 MHz. Of course, we are hardly going to see a laptop able to support that amount of memory, but whatever – the processor can. At the same time, the Core i7-8750H is limited to the 64GB of its generation, while in the iGPU department, both of them feature the Intel UHD Graphics 630.

Benchmarks

Intel Core i7-8750H completely obliterates its competitor in the multicore score. However, when we divide the results on the number of cores for each processor the results become slightly different – 221 versus 198 in favor of the Core i5-9300H.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

Conclusion

Honestly, we weren’t expecting anything from the results. As you may have noticed the upgrade from the 8th Generation to the 9th Generation is ever so slight, so there wasn’t any chance for the Core i5-9300H to beat the Core i7-8750H. However, it is both cheaper and offers a better performance-per-core which may present a better gaming experience.
