Intel Core i5-1035G7 vs i5-8265U – the new Ice Lake has 16% more CPU and 158% more GPU power

The Core i5-1035G7 is a great performer. The latter proves to us all that it’s faster than i7-8650U which is a strong and expensive 14nm CPU. So, a current-gen Core i5 can beat Kaby Lake Core i7 with ease but what about the previous-gen Core i5 processors?

To answer the question we “brought” an i5-8265U which is a Whiskey Lake CPU that still has a good amount of processing power under the hood. The Core i5s are very important for Intel because they offer a good amount of computing performance (sometimes close to some Core i7s), they are much faster than the Core i3s, and at the same time, their price isn’t going to empty your wallet.

Core i5-1035G7 vs i5-8265U, Ice Lake vs Whiskey Lake, let’s do it.

Quick Specs

Intel is asking $320.00 for i5-1035G7 and $297.00 for i5-8265U – an 8% price difference.

Those processors are equipped with 4 cores, 8 threads, 6 MB cache size, and almost the same TDP values – both CPUs have some very close specs. The Ice Lake processor has lower base and boost clocks (1.20 GHz – 3.70 GHz vs 1.60 GHz – 3.90 GHz) than its Whiskey Lake contender but the latter isn’t very good in terms of supported memory frequencies – DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133. The i5-1035G7 is a real swagger with its DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733 max supported memory clocks.

The Ice Lake CPU has Intel Iris Plus G7 iGPU and i5-8265U has a modest Intel UHD 620.

Gaming tests

You can have a look at some gaming tests of Intel Iris Plus G7 iGPU and Intel UHD 620 in our previous comparison – Intel Core i5-1035G7 vs i7-8650U.

Verdict

It sounds like a good deal – the Ice Lake processor is just 8% more expensive than i5-8265U. At the same time, the i5-1035G7 has a 16% higher score when it comes to 3D rendering, and its iGPU just smashed the UHD 620. There is more, the 10th gen Ice Lake processor can be found in a thinner, lighter, and more compact machine than the ones configured with i5-8265U. The notebooks bundled with those new CPUs offer better battery life, better portability, and better comfort during work because of the lesser dissipated heat (ergo, this leads to cooler and more silent laptops).

The i5-8265U still has it. If you find a good deal with it’ll be a good choice for some usual daily tasks such as Web browsing, YouTube videos, or something a bit more heavy like photo editing. Unfortunately, if you play light and casual games from time to time, the UHD 620 isn’t the best iGPU performer out there.
