GIGABYTE AERO 17 HDR (2020) vs GIGABYTE AERO 17 HDR (2019) – the new one is more powerful than ever

The chunky 17-inchers belong to the past. This year’s version of GIGABYTE AERO 17 HDR proves that a big laptop can be a true desktop replacement despite being thin and light. It has all the ingredients for a high-end gaming machine -6/8-core 10th gen Intel processor, the latest NVIDIA RTX Super video cards (up to RTX 2080 Super Max-Q), NVMe storage support, and high-refresh-rate displays. It seems like a complete gaming package and it’s fitted into a slim and thin body.

Additionally, there is a hefty battery unit that powers the internals when you’re away from the plug. we’re going to be more specific and we’ll check all the new things one by one.

Design: decent size and weight for a 17.3″ laptop

GIGABYTE AERO 17 HDR (2020) has a 21.4 mm profile which sounds very good for a big laptop that can “carry” powerful hardware at the same time. The weight is 2.50 kg which is on the light side for a machine like this one (because of the aluminum build). As you can see, the design is unchanged from the last year’s device but the machine looks good, especially with the super-thin bezels around the big display.

Display: high refresh rate Full HD panel and a 4K optional display

If you consider yourself a gaming enthusiast, the 1080p IPS panel seems like a good idea, thanks to its 144 Hz refresh rate, which will provide a smoother gameplay experience. On the other hand, there is a 4K display that supports HDR and it’s able to fully cover the sRGB gamut. Both panels come factory calibrated and they have an average dE value below 1.0 making them suitable for color-sensitive work.

Hardware: up to Intel Core i9-10980HK and NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super Max-Q

The laptop can be configured with some of the most powerful CPUs and GPUs out there. There are two 8-core CPU options and one 6-core variant – Core i9-10980HK (2.4GHz – 5.3GHz), Core i7-10875H (2.3GHz – 5.1GHz), and Core i7-10750H (2.6GHz – 5.0GHz). As for the GPUs, you can go as high as the RTX 2080 Super Max-Q or you can pick the RTX 2070 Super Max-Q. Yep, no full-blown GPU options – they dissipate too much heat for a 21 mm-thick laptop.

Moreover, the Windforce cooling has two fans and 5 heat pipes – let’s hope that this is enough for a decently cooled and quiet laptop.

Connectivity and ports: a nice amount of ports

The port selection looks good – 3x USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A), one USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, an HDMI 2.0, a mini DP 1.4, an audio jack, a mic-in jack, an SD card reader, and an Ethernet port.

Storage and other specs: NVMe, backlit keyboard, huge battery, and Wi-Fi 6

Powerful hardware needs a big battery to last longer when it’s not plugged into the wall. That’s why Gigabyte has fitted a 94.24Wh unit that will power the laptop when the latter is away from the charger. For storage, you can rely on two NVMe ports – that means fast boot time and short loading between game levels. Gigabyte has implemented a backlit keyboard that has an Anti-ghosting function as well.
