ASUS ROG Zephyrus M15 GU502 (2020) vs Zephyrus M GU502 (2019) – what’s new?

The last year’s GU502 is a decent mid-ranger and because of its price tag, it’s accessible for regular users as well. The same goes for the 2020 variant – it’s an updated model that is improved in almost every direction – a bit cleaner look, new and more powerful CPUs, and refreshed RTX Super graphics cards from NVIDIA.

Simply, that’s all but at the same time, it’s a lot because it’s an almost entirely new device. Let’s hope that the 2020 one will have better cooling because we were not very happy with the thermals of the 2019 model but at least it stands its ground really well against some other competitors.

Design: almost unchanged but a bit cleaner

If you look closer at the provided image below, you’ll probably notice that the newer machine looks almost identical to the 2019 model. However, you can order the 2020 one in Prism Gray and Prism Black design variants that feature a cleaner and simplified look – for example, the backlit ROG logo is a no go here and its replaced by a small ROG-branded plate that takes place on the lid. The Prism machines are 1mm thicker which counts for nothing and if you prefer clean design you can definitely check these laptops.

In terms of utilized materials, the new variant has a magnesium-alloy body (just like its predecessor) that weighs exactly the same as the 2019 notebook – 1.9kg and even the profiles of both machines have the identical thickness of 18.9 mm.

Display: optional 240Hz panel and a 4K display with 100% Adobe RGB color coverage

For a mid-ranger, the Zephyrus M15 GU502 (2020) offers plenty of display options. We start with a 1080p 144Hz IPS panel, the next one is an optional 240Hz unit with 3ms response time and you can go up to 4K display with a mind-blowing 100% Adobe RGB color coverage. The latter is suitable for content creators or for everyone that likes accurate colors and a crispier image thanks to the higher resolutions of the display.

Hardware: Comet Lake-H inside and NVIDIA RTX Super

Blue and green for the updated model, we mean Intel and NVIDIA.  The Zephyrus M15 GU502 (2020) can be configured with a refreshed 6-core 14nm CPU like the i7-10750H or if you need more power for computing or for CPU-intensive games, you can choose the 8-core i7-10875H. Both CPUs have a 45W TDP but it is interesting to see the actual power limits.

This year’s model could be equipped with up to a full-blown version of the RTX 2070 Super that features 2560 shaders (compared to 2304 CUDA cores of the non-Super RTX 2070).

Connectivity and ports: finally a Thunderbolt support

One of the cons of the 2019 model was the lack of Thunderbolt support but ASUS has fixed that in 2020. Let’s check the ports – two USB 3.2 Type-A (Gen1), a USB 3.2 Type-A (Gen2), one USB Type-C with Thunderbolt 3, an HDMI 2.0b, an Ethernet port, and an audio combo jack. So, the I/O is rich in connectivity options and we are happy about that.

Storage and other specs: two M.2 slots and Wi-Fi 6

Just like the 2019 variant, the 2020 model has two NVMe slots with RAID support. There are two DIMMs that can handle DDR4 3200MHz – we have 2666MHz only for the last year’s machine. Not only that but Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 are here, which is pretty normal for a mid-range gaming device in 2020. In addition, the per-key RGB backlit keyboard looks almost the same and probably it’ll be (again) comfortable for gaming. The battery seems unchanged, it’s a 4-cell 76Wh unit.
