[38 Gaming tests and videos] NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 [80W] vs GeForce GTX 1660 Ti – surprisingly the cheaper GPU is 5% faster on average
It’s not the first time that we are talking about the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2060 (80W) and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. If you still remember, we have two dedicated articles regarding these two GPUs – in case you have missed them, you can find them here – RTX 2060 (80W) and GTX 1660 Ti (80W).
The RTX video card and its Max-Q sibling are the cheapest way to get the ray-tracing in games (as well as DLSS). The GeForce GTX 2060 (80W) is powerful enough for every new gaming title. Still, if you want more than 60 FPS on Ultra settings, probably the GeForce RTX 2070 and the newer SUPER version will do the job better, but the end price of an RTX 2070 (SUPER)-based notebooks is higher (at least in most cases). However, if you need a combo of features like RT, DLSS, and a good price/performance ratio, the GeForce GTX 2060 (80W) should be on your shortlist.
On the other hand, we have the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. This is a very capable mid-range graphics solution that offers very close performance to its RTX sibling. In our previous article, we’ve called it “the worst nightmare of the RTX 2060 80W” and further down below you’ll see that we are (probably) right. In our case, we saw that the GTX 1660 Ti was boosting much more than the RTX 2060 (80W). The latter is burdened with tensor cores and more CUDAs (and these two hardware extras need additional power as well), but its TGP is the same as the GeForce 1660 Ti.

Specs overview
Both video cards are Turing GPUs. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2060 (80W) supports ray-tracing and DLSS. This one has 240 tensor cores that are taking care of the computational part of this extra. The RTX 2060 uses the TU106 chip and it has 48 ROPs, 1920 shaders, and this GPU can be found in three different TGP versions – 80W, 90W, and 115W. Frequency-wise, the 80W variant can go up to 960 MHz for the base clock and up to 1200 MHz for the boost. The memory is 6GB GDDR6 (14000 MHz) with a 192-bit memory bus.
The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti (TU116) has a reduced amount of shaders compared to the RTX 2060 – 1536 units. Its frequencies look much higher compared to the other video card – 1455 MHz for the base clock and the boost is as high as 1590 MHz. The memory is clocked at 12000 MHz. The TU116 has the same ROP count as its opponent – 48 units.
In the following screenshots, you can spot that the GTX 1660 Ti is boosting 225 MHz more than the RTX 2060 80W.

Verdict
Just what we were expected – the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is 5% faster on average when compared to the GeForce RTX 2060 (80W). Not the biggest difference out there but if you don’t need extras like RT and DLSS, the GeForce RTX 2060 (80W) will be a pointless buy for you. Contrary to that, if you want these two options, this GPU is the cheapest ticket to the ray-tracing train.
However, we are quite surprised by the performance of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti – cheaper and faster. Which makes it one of the best deals at the moment.
